Balancing SEO with Readability
As many people with a basic understanding of Internet marketing realize, when writing content for the Internet, it is important that you focus on search engine optimization if you want to increase the online visibility of your website or a particular article or page. Having said that, one of the biggest mistakes made by inexperienced web copywriters is sacrificing readability. It is all well and good to have a site or page rank high in a search engine, but if browsers try to read it and find that it is confusing, poorly written, or just plain bad, they will quickly leave the page in favor of another site where the information they seek is more readable.

So how can you ensure your web marketing strategy does not fall at the first hurdle because of unreadable content?

The key to balancing readability and search engine optimization is to write online content for your website which is unique and at the same time grabs the attention of the reader from the very start. This is an important point as most people simply skim read websites rather than reading carefully all the way through. It also helps if you write about the topic at hand in a way that engages with and relates to the individual experiences of readers. There is nothing as interesting as a personal story, anecdote or experience related in a one-to-one style.

In terms of search engine optimization, obviously you must include specific keywords. But it is important that you use them naturally rather than spraying the article with them unnecessarily. It is immediately obvious to most people when they are reading web copy that feels forced or artificial. Over use of keywords is as bad, if not worse, than not using them at all, and search engines such as Google may penalize you for it as well.

Think carefully about your header tags as these are a big factor in how your website is ranked by search engines. Highlighting keywords in the content will aid search engine optimization but beyond a certain point it can also lead to your website being flagged as spam.

Keep a clear focus on the subject matter you are writing about and don't go on for too long or wander off the point you are trying to make, as this will lead to people losing interest and leaving the site.

Remember that making sure your website is popular with search engines is only the first step. When someone clicks on your page they are expecting to see information that is useful and interesting. To ensure this, it is best to hire a professional copywriter or utilize the copywriting capabilities of an Internet marketing firm.
