My Site Has Been Crawled. Should I Call An Exterminator?

Written by Carol Sheridan, at Active Web Group. Posted on August 2nd, 2012

As Internet Marketing Specialists we have our own ‘buzz words’ or jargon.  Just like every other industry.  But to our clients, those all-important people who collectively underwrite our paychecks in exchange for higher rankings, our services are a foreign language with no translation.

In this posting we’re going to explain one of the key elements of a successful SEO campaign-backlinks.  The goal is to assist online business owners to better understand some of the key elements of a search engine optimization campaign.  This way they will be able to better allocate their Internet marketing budget and most of all, watch their site(s) reap the benefits.

How Do Search Engines Find Their Results?

Before we go into what a backlink is, let’s discuss the framework in which it exists.  Every time you look something up on a search engine, you are not searching the entire web.  If that were even possible, it could take all day.  Instead, you are scanning that search engine’s current index of the web for your given topic.

This task is performed by software programs called spiders.  Spiders receive your search request and collect a few web pages.  Next they follow the links on those pages and collect the pages these point to.  This step is repeated until their index has been scanned for every page that is relevant to your search.  These results are posted as Search Engine Results Page(s) or SERPs and can number in the hundreds (although most of us will look over only the first couple of SERPs pages).

Since links are the bridge that search engine spiders travel to collect web pages building the best quality links should be an essential element of any website’s search engine optimization campaign.  Simply put, backlinks are links on another website or posting that ‘point’ back to your site via a direct link to one or more of your website’s pages.  Now you’ll see why you want all roads to ‘point’ to your site.  The quality and quantity of these sites that host your links is important as well.  But we will tackle that subject in a future posting.
